Ito rules: learn in minutes

Ito is a cooperative party game of subjective clues. Online, each player receives virtual cards with secret numbers and must describe them using the drawn theme so the group can arrange everything in ascending order.

Lightning summary: 30-second overview

Receive secret numbers

As soon as you enter a room, the system sends virtual numbered cards only to you.

Describe using the theme

Use creative hints related to the drawn theme to indicate whether your number is low, medium, or high.

Order as a team

Talk in chat/voice and position the virtual cards in ascending order. If everything lines up, everyone wins!

Objective in one sentence

Communicate the magnitude of your numbers with creative clues, interpret your friends' examples, and place all virtual cards in a perfect sequence. A win belongs to everyone; a mistake becomes learning.

Step by step

  1. 1Pick a name in Ito Online and create or join a room by code.
  2. 2Wait for everyone to connect; the host starts the match when there are enough players.
  3. 3The platform draws a theme and sends virtual cards with numbers from 1 to 100 to each person.
  4. 4Use the built-in chat/voice (or your favorite call) to coordinate clues and order cards in the interface.

Game phases

1. Clue phase (writing/association)

Each player looks at the secret number on their card (1 to 100) and writes a clue tied to the chosen theme, never revealing numeric values.

  • Use graded references (e.g., 'as cold as ice cream straight from the freezer').
  • Avoid numbers, explicit scales or direct value comparisons.
  • You may refine your clue during conversation if you find a better reference.

2. Collaborative ordering

With all clues on the virtual table, the group debates and positions each card on an ascending line that begins at card 0 shown by the platform. Move cards freely until everyone agrees.

  • The app automatically identifies the owner of each card; focus only on the order.
  • Lock down extremes first (lowest and highest) and then fill in the middle values.
  • If someone holds more than one card (advanced modes), try to match which clue belongs to which position.

3. Reveal phase

When the group feels confident, reveal cards from the smallest to the largest. If they are all in ascending order, everyone wins! Otherwise, talk it through quickly and try again.

  • Mistakes become great references for future rounds—note what confused the group.
  • After each win, increase difficulty by adding more cards per player (Challenger/Extreme).

Card examples

Chosen theme: "Temperatures you can tolerate". Notice how the clues position numbers along the scale.

Ice cream just out of the freezer12Ito Online logo

A very low value for the theme 'Temperatures you'd tolerate'. Helps anchor the cold end of the scale.

Cool autumn breeze47Ito Online logo

Represents the middle of the scale; makes it easier to compare against more extreme clues.

Indicates intense heat, guiding the placement of higher-value cards.

Advanced modes

Challenger Mode

After winning, pick a player to receive two cards per round. They must craft two different clues and track how each one is interpreted.

Extreme Mode

Each player receives two additional cards (without using the extra colored ones). Requires memory to remember who positioned each clue and demands more precise conversations.

Idea taken from the "Challenger Mode" section of the MeepleBR manual: add extra cards gradually until everyone is comfortable.

Communication tips

  • Anchor the extremes first (values near 1 or 100) to build a shared mental scale.
  • Prefer everyday examples everyone in the group knows. Obscure references increase the chance of errors.
  • Use relative comparisons ('a bit hotter than', 'almost as heavy as') instead of searching for the perfect example.
  • Online, keep messages short and use the group's chat/voice to confirm everyone understood the clue.

Quick FAQ

Can we talk out of turn?

Yes! The manual encourages free conversation. Interrupt only to keep things flowing and ensure everyone participates.

What if we get the order wrong?

You lose the round, but you can readjust and try again immediately. Use the mistake to calibrate future references.

Is there a time limit?

Officially no. Some groups use a countdown to keep the pace (tip mentioned on ItoGame.Online).
